Windows 10 and Windows 11 explained

Posted on

My computer tells me that I need to upgrade to W11. Is this important?
Yes. Having the latest version of Windows will be more secure and safer.

When it checks  my computer, it says it doesn’t meet the requirement for W11. Why?

Any computer older than about 2018 has parts which are now out-of-date.

A hopefully helpful analogy:
→ Your car has not changed but the rules have.
The engine is too out-of-date to go
into the Low Emission zone (without a fine)
→ Your computer has not changed but the rules have.
The chips are too out-of-date to
upgrade to Windows 11 (without risks)

  • Can I replace the old chips?
    Not economically.
  • I believe W10 stops being supported in October 2025. What does this mean?
Microsoft will no longer issue updates to W10. The purpose of updates is to protect you from people trying to get access to your computer.
  • Will my computer stop working?
Definitely not. You will probably get lots reminders encouraging you to upgrade to W11.
  • If I ignore these reminders, will everything carry on working?
Yes BUT you will be more at risk when you use the internet. The level of risk will increase over time.

What should I do?

There are a number of alternatives:

  1. Buy a replacement, more up-to-date W11 computer.
Pros: Faster, more reliable machine with guarantee. Cons: Cost, setting up, transferrig data, choice.
  2. Stop doing anything involving the internet
Pros: No security risk Cons: limited use
  3. Download anti-virus software such as Norton or McAfee.
Pros: High level of protection Cons: Cost
  4. Do nothing.
Pros: Free  Cons: Risks, risks, risks

  5. Enrol on the Extended Security Update (ESU) program
Pros: Free, extends security support from Microsoft until October 2027. Cons: It’s just security NOT functional updates, it’s just until 2027
