Computers for beginners (six x 2 hr sessions)
level 1


This introductory course is designed for people with little, or no experience of using a Personal Computer (PC). It explains, in non technical terms, the parts of a computer and some of the jargon used. Learners will become familiar with both mouse and keyboard. The necessity for good PC housekeeping and saving your work will be explained and demonstrated. Using Microsoft Word ™ learners will be introduced to basic word processing techniques. By the end of the course they will be able to produce and edit simple documents, change text styles, size, colour, underline, cut and paste and more.
Prerequisites: none

Microsoft Word (six x 2 hr sessions)
level 2/3


Practice is provided in basic word-processing – typing, formatting, moving and copying text and page layout. Learners are introduced to text alignment, clip art, tables, bulleted and numbered lists, headers and footers, file management and finding and replacing. The course is designed to increase confidence in word-processing and to enable learners to produce a wide range of different documents.
Prerequisites: Learners should have attended Computers for Beginners and/or be able to use Microsoft Windows, the mouse and keyboard.

Further Word (five x 2 hr sessions)
level 3


This course is designed to introduce learners to some of the more advanced functions of Microsoft Word™. Topics covered include all the ways of correcting mistakes, working with more than one file, mail merge, tracking changes, passwords, word counts, styles, templates, diagrams, printing booklets as well as more advanced work with tables and clip art. At the end of the course learners will have the confidence to produce a full range of professional and attractive documents.
Prerequisites: Learners should have attended Microsoft Word™ and/or be familiar with the topics covered in that course.

Introduction to Microsoft ExcelTM (four or five x 2hr sessions)
level 1



Discover how to build spreadsheets, prepare budgets and databases. Ideal for family finances or club records etc.
Prerequisites: Learners should be able to use Microsoft Windows, the mouse and keyboard.

Introduction to the Internet & email ( six x 2hr sessions)
level 2/3


This course is designed for people who have some understanding of computers and can use a mouse and keyboard, or who have attended ''Computing for Beginners'' and want to gain an understanding of the Internet, email and the jargon used. They will practice using search engines to find information they want and will be introduced to price comparison sites, Shopping Malls and the UK Online web site. In addition they will set up an email address and send and receive emails.
Prerequisites: Learners should have attended Computers for Beginners and/or can use Microsoft Windows, the mouse and keyboard.

Introduction to Family History (four x 2 hr sessions)
level 2


Students will gain an understanding of researching family background and preparing a family tree using a range of specialised web sites.
Prerequisites: Learners should have attended an Internet and Email course and can use Microsoft Windows, the mouse and keyboard.

Drop-in Sessions


For learners who have completed or are currently taking one of our courses. If you would like to practice or are having difficulty or need a little help, arrange to visit our drop-in session at the Fleetville Community Centre on a Monday where there will be friendly and helpful tutors to point you in the right direction

1st Steps: Introduction to Computers or Introduction to Internet & Email
level 1


Designed for people with absolutely no previous experience of computers each workshop includes a short taste of one of the above topics.
Prerequisites: None

Digital Photography (four x 2 hr sessions)
level 2


For people who have attended the Computing for Beginners course or who have knowledge of Microsoft Windows™. The course is designed to help you get the most out of your digital camera and will cover using your computer to edit and print your pictures.
Prerequisites: Learners should have attended Computers for Beginners and can use Microsoft Windows, the mouse and keyboard.
