The charity for IT training and education

for residents of St Albans City & District

About the Charity

Who we are and how we started

Computer Friendly is a training organisation funded and managed by the charity St Albans and District Cafe Net. Cafe Net was founded in 2002 and for more than a year provided basic computer and Internet training from a former chapel using volunteers.

The charity reformed at the end of 2003 by setting up Computer Friendly, with a new part time manager but the same volunteers. Now with one part-time staff member, we use Fleetville Community Centre, where our dedicated team of volunteers offer drop-ins, Information Advice & Guidance, 1st Steps in Computers, leisure and computer software courses. Our team of volunteers also assist our volunteer tutors to provide longer courses in computer suites in local secondary schools. See our current timetable for more detail.

The prime objectives of the charity are to assist any one in St Albans and District, including disadvantaged and excluded people, in gaining computer skills. These people could include the retired, unemployed or disabled from diverse groups. We aim to support appropriate individuals who would benefit from our unique style of learning. While most learners attend training courses in public venues, such as schools, our proposed outreach programme will assist those that need training in a location appropriate to their needs.

The charity is directed by a board of trustees and managed by a steering group comprising some trustees and appropriate partners and associates.
